About Sunset Zoo

The Sunset Zoo is located in Manhattan, Kansas.  The AZA-accredited zoo houses over 250 animals. This zoo was founded in 1933.  Some of the land that makes up the zoo was originally a cemetery.  The land had been found to be too rocky for a cemetery and been put up for sale. Animals were brought to the area in 1930.  However, it was not made into a park until 1934.

The zoo in Manhattan has animal feedings for the guests to watch for otters, chimpanzees, the sloth bear and chacoan peccary on a daily basis from April through October.  Keeper Chats are offered on weekends from April through October on hyenas, cheetahs, gibbons, maned wolves, the anteater and chimpanzees.

Sunset Zoo is divided into these areas: African Forest Trail, Asian Forest Trail, Australian Walk-About, Education Collection, Kansas Plains and Trails of South America.

Some of the animals you can see at the zoo are: cheetah, chimpanzee, amur tiger, red panda, wallaby, chinchilla, prairie dog, bobcat, fox, maned wolf, Reed’s titi monkey, poison Dart Frog, kookaburra, bald eagle, African cichlid, clownfish, spiders, scorpions, snakes, turtle and lizards.  Peacocks roam the grounds.

New additions to the Kansas zoo in 2012 were the John Woodard Memorial Gibbons Exhibit in the Asian Forest Trail and the Nature Exploration Center.
